The Clinical & Pathological Characteristics of Subreolar Absecess

Abstract
A clinical review was carried out in 18 cases of subareolar subareolar for three years from January 1989 to December 1991 at the department of general surgery of Saint Benedict Hospital in Pusan, Korea.
@ES The results were obtained as follows:
@EN 1) The prevalent age group of subarealar abscesses was between 20 and 61 years, and the mean age was 41 years. 13 cases972%) were premenopausal women and 4 cases923%) were unmarried women.
2) Symptoms was from one week to ten years in duration.
3) Recurring abscesses develeped in seven of the patients prior to definitive treatment.
4) In 11 cases(61%) of subareolar abscesses, no fistula was noted, in 6 cases(33%), one fistular was noted and 1 cases(6%), two fistalae were noted.
5) Inverted nipples were seen in 10 patients(55%).
6) Microscopic fistula were found in 12 cases967%) of the patients and communication with a duct was identified in 6 cases933%0 without notable ductal ectasia, but rich granulation tissue lining the fiatula tract is most striking.
7) Squamous metaplasia of the duct was found 7 cases(38%) including a case showing the fistula wall lined extensively with squamous epitelium.
8) Subareolar abscesses yielded a higher proportion of no growth with culture, 2 cases(20%) show Staphylococcus aureus and 1 case(10%) shows Bacteroides.
9) The aims of operation were minimizing the injuries of nipple and radical treatment by total exscision of diseased duct which prevents recurring the disease.
